The Coaching Mindset

Coaching Shows Up Where You Least Expect It

It's the coaching that happens outside of a scheduled remote call, a conference room, a structured agenda, or an attached invoice. If you've spent time living in a coaching mindset, you already know that some of the most powerful coaching moments just arrive.

Those moments show up in a text message from a friend before a big interview. Or at the kitchen table between a parent and an adult child who is clearly saying something without saying it. Other moments arise when you're standing next to a stranger in a grocery store parking lot where your T-shirt advertises your favorite sports team, and you find yourself realizing you were placed together because you were "meant" to meet.

This is the coaching experience that isn't a certification. It's not a skill you deploy. It's a way of paying attention.

The Common Coaching Thread

What connects all three of these — the friend, the child, the stranger — isn't the setting. It's a posture you carry in life:

  • Curiosity before advice. The first instinct isn't to solve; it's to understand.
  • Presence over agenda. You're not steering the conversation somewhere; you're following where it needs to go.
  • Trust in the other person's own answers. Most people aren't looking for a fix. They're looking for space to think out loud with someone who won't rush them.

You can't schedule these moments. You don't put them on a calendar or bill for them. The good news is that you can be ready for them, and that readiness is really what the coaching mindset is about. It's not a skill set you switch on. It's a way of moving through the world, always open to the situation in front of you.
